FARGO -- Fargo-Moorhead International Potluck is kicking off 2019’s "Welcoming Week" with the "Community Table" event.
Teaming up with Welcoming FM, the Plains Art Museum, Cultural Diversity Resources, and Growing Together Community Gardens, the Community Table invites community members to have a meal and to try food from various cultures in the area.
The Community Table takes place at the Plains Art Museum from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. The event is free and open to the public.
As part of the potluck, participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring a culturally relevant dish to share.
“What’s more important than bringing a dish, however” said Peter Schott, founder and organizer for the F-M International Potluck, “are the connections made between neighbors.”
As part of the evening’s festivities, the local live dance team The Krownz will perform. A farmer’s market featuring the best of locally grown vegetables and fruits will be available to explore as well.
The International Potluck is an ongoing group of community members interested in connecting with others through shared food and stories. Monthly gatherings are scheduled throughout the Fargo-Moorhead community for residents to pair potluck dinners with conversations around culture. All potlucks are free and open to the public.
“Our mission is to connect people through food and storytelling,” said Schott. “Music and dance are powerful ways to share a cultural story in ways that transcend any cultural differences.”
Welcoming Week is an annual series of community events that bring together immigrants, refugees, and native-born residents to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone. The F-M Metro has participated in Welcoming Week for the past five years. In 2019, 14 events designed to help improve the social and economic integration of refugees, migrants, and newcomers to the community will take place.
