CNN in a new story posted today reported that according to a new United Nations report, the number of refugees around the world has surpassed 70 million people. The United Nations defines refugees as people who have been forced to flee their homes due to violence or persecution. This new staggering number is the highest in history.
The CNN story goes on to say that "the world's displaced population is now almost double that from a decade ago, and includes an estimated 13.6 million people who fled their homes in 2018, according to the UN Refugee Agency's annual Global Trends Report."
Coincidentally, this month's International Potluck event scheduled for Thursday, June 20, aims to highlight this very issue. Check out this previous IP Blog story for more information about the June International Potluck scheduled Thursday, June 20, at the picnic shelter at Oak Grove Park, 170 Maple Street N. in Fargo.
Also note, should there be inclement weather tomorrow, preventing an outdoor event, the IP planning crew is working to identify a back-up host site. Stay tuned for updates.
