The May 2019 Fargo-Moorhead International Potluck will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota building, 3911 20th Ave. S. in Fargo.
This month's IP will feature two focal points:
First, the Red River Finns, a local Finnish cultural heritage group, will join us and share some traditional holiday foods and talk about Finnish settlement in the region.
And second, Sky Purdin will share about a rug weaving project she's been working on. Purdin will display three rugs she made as a part of the Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship. This was a scholarship funded by the North Dakota Council on the Arts.
Purdin will talk a few minutes about how rug weaving is a very strong tradition in Finland and how she was introduced to it through her family. She also will speak about what makes the Finnish weaving style unique.
Purdin's mentor will be present at the pot luck. And she may speak about Finnish culture too.
