MOORHEAD, Minn. -- A coalition of Kurdish supporters will host a peaceful community vigil from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Moorhead's Trinity Lutheran Church, 210 7th St. S.
The event will begin at noon at the church, and then about 1:15 p.m. the attendees will walk to the Main Avenue bridge that spans the Red River between Moorhead and Fargo, where they will peacefully support the local Kurdish community, but more importantly, draw awareness to the plight of the civilian Kurds in Syria.
This peaceful show of support is open to anyone in the Fargo-Moorhead community who wishes to support the local Kurdish community, and support other New Americans as well.
On Oct. 6, U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly decided to remove U.S. military troops from the Kurdish-controlled areas in northeastern Syria, effectively leaving the civil-war-torn country open for Turkish attack.
On Oct. 9, Turkey invaded that part of Syria in a military operation called "Operation Peace Spring."
According to the publication Business Insider, "Turkey's goal is to create a buffer zone at the Turkish border of Syria between the Turks and Kurds, and to send the 3.6 million Syrian refugees who have come to Turkey as a result of the civil war back to Syria."
More importantly, the Kurds are a minority ethnic group in the Middle East, and the U.S. considered Kurdish fighters to be allies in the fight against ISIS. President Trump's removal of troops is seen as a betrayal among the Kurds and their supporters, here in Fargo-Moorhead and internationally.
Organizers of Saturday's community vigil here in Moorhead will serve ethnic foods from the Middle Eastern region at noon at Trinity Church, and the event is free and open to all.
