Our friends over at Chira Global Development Organization will be hosting a commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the Yazidi genocide that occurred on Aug. 3, 2014.
According to organizers, the event will honor and remember the victims of Yazidi genocide that happened in Iraq, and neighboring regions
Organizers say there will be Yazidi leaders coming from different states to give updates on Yazidi the genocide case and also share information on the Yazidi living conditions in Iraq.
The leaders also will discuss the future of Yazidis in Iraq and around the world.
The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Dakota Medical Foundation office, 4141 28th Ave. S. in Fargo.
The Yazidi genocide began in 2014, and was perpetrated by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, according to the United Nations. The genocide led to the expulsion, flight and effective exile of the Yazidis from their ancestral lands in Northern Iraq whose women and girls were forced into sexual slavery by the Islamic State and whose men were killed by the thousands. The genocide led to the abduction of Yazidi women and massacres that killed five thousand Yazidi civilians during what has been called a "forced conversion campaign" being carried out in Northern Iraq by ISIL, starting in 2014. You can find out more at this Wikipedia post regarding the genocide.
